THE Seventh-day Adventist CONGREGATION in Kuils River has always been an integral part of the educational institution with which it shares its location - Good Hope College which became, in recent years,Good Hope High School.
The church had its beginning in 1963, when Good Hope College transferred from Athlone, to the small rural village of Kuils River. Both school and church are now right in the centre of a large, thriving urban community, with an off-campus community of Seventh-day Adventist's filling the chapel on campus to capacity. In 1963 the small congregation of teachers and boarding students met in the men's hostel, the first building on campus. From there they moved to the dining room, then to the high school block, and then to the library, as these buildings were added.
The large hall where we worship today was built by principal A.J. Raitt in the 70's, 2/3 of its space serving as a gym, and 1/3 as a chapel. In 1983 the chapel was consecrated to the worship of God. The baptised membership of the church has grown from 20 in 1963 to about 360 today. The average weekly attendance is well over 400. What is the Kuils River church family especially happy about? It's community welfare activities, inspiring children's programmes, musical and artistic talent, and it's warm, friendly atmosphere.
